What Is True Belongs To Me

“What is true belongs to me.”

Lucius Annaeus Seneca

These words were said by the great Stoic Roman philosopher Seneca who inspired me to write this.

It doesn’t matter what you do in life, but if you know you have done nothing wrong. If you know that everything you did was for the good of everyone. If you know that your heart is pure, that all you did was just be a good person and all your actions were right and you didn’t hurt anyone, then stop caring about people’s opinions. Don’t explain yourself because no matter what you say, the opinion of people who have already formed it in their head about you will not change. Also, the fact that people get influenced by others so easily will not make them see your true value. Go on, time will tell. Time will always reveal the truth. Or rather, God is up and sees everything.

“God has entrusted me with myself.”

Epictetus

Keep going. Don’t stay where you are no longer welcome. You can’t force respect, trust, loyalty, love. I know it’s frustrating, but when you know that everything you’ve done has been good and right, then don’t let people’s inability to understand it affect your life, your inner peace. Move on!

“When things seem to have reached that stage, merely say: I won’t play any longer and take your departure.”

Epictetus

Who does not see your true value doesn’t deserve you. Don’t change, don’t change your lifestyle and your principles just because some people didn’t know how to treat you and respect you at your true value. It is and will be their loss, not yours. That is why nothing is above your health, the peace of your mind, your life. What others think may affect you, but you don’t have to take that into account. You know who you are and what you do. It is enough for you to know the truth about who you are. That’s all that matters. The inability to see blinded those who do not understand, the loss is theirs not yours. And those who really know you, know exactly who you are.

“Just that you do the right thing, the rest doesn’t matter.”

Marcus Aurelius

In conclusion, through the Letters From A Stoic, Seneca made it clear that philosophy, the love of wisdom, is to be put in practical use in pursuit of the happy life.

“What we hear the philosophers saying and what we find in their writings should be applied in our pursuit of the happy life. We should hunt out the helpful pieces of teaching, and the spirited and noble-minded sayings which are capable of immediate practical application ー not far-fetched or archaic expressions or extravagant metaphors and figures of speech ー and learn them so well that words become works.”

Lucius Annaeus Seneca
